THE MURAL AT USSC

THE STORY goes….

The final week of Summer camp belonged to the US Sailing Center - City of Miami Parks Sailing Program. Coach Lauren was new on our volunteer staff, but no stranger to our community. She grew up sailing on Biscayne Bay and fell in love with our sport. It was no wonder that I took her up on her offer to help us for the final week of Summer Camp before heading back to college in Main.

As usual, when kids arrive at the US Sailing Center (USSC), we gather on the second-floor breezeway for an introduction and a float plan of the day. Yours truly prepared a whiteboard and handed it to Lauren saying “if you can improve on this, please go ahead”. Within 5-minutes, I looked back and could not believe my eyes. Lauren had drafted a picture of our boats full of kids sailing with Miami in the background. She continued to do caricatures throughout the week and then offered to paint a mural. I suggested she present the idea to Pat Downey, the Executive Director of the USSC, and she did.

Lauren came back a week later and turned her vision into reality. What is truly remarkable is that she did it in a very short period of time. About three hours on Friday, three hours on Saturday, and one hour on Sunday for the final details. How about that?

  • To celebrate the US Sailing Center, the programs, and the boats that it facilitates. Also, to commemorate our friend and fellow Olympian, Kevin Burnham, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. We all gathered on the Bay for a casual, ceremonial race. The start must have looked very similar to the mural. R.I.P Kevin!

  • We are not sure where she got her artistic talents from. She is completely self-taught!

  • I would just like people to know that I was self-taught at art and that I have been sailing since I was seven and now am on the Bowdoin sailing team.
