Saturday Youth Sailing S6-E6

fun, safe, & learning!

Just like a tripod, we have three fundamental legs that define us. Fun, Safety, and Learning are what we are about. All three must be achieved to have a successful day. To have fun, we must be likable so that others want to be around us. We need to learn the skills to have fun and be safe. Remember, safety is our top priority, ensuring we all feel secure and reassured.

Our day started in the classroom with a short lecture on how to hold a straight course and how to line up sailing next to one another. Then, we rigged four RS Fevas and two RS Ventures and headed out sailing. The South-Westerly breeze was shifty and puffy, making it challenging to practice what we learned in the classroom. The good news is that it wasn't our last practice, so let's try again next Saturday.

Our safety protocol should always be adhered to: Life jackets should be worn as soon as we venture past the docks' green fence; Coach boats, safety boats, and both RS Ventures must carry a VHF radio; Either the coach boat or the safety boat must follow (or lead) the first team out;' Once outside the harbor area, let's stay together as a team. Do not sail away on your own! Chances of another vessel running into one of our boats are much less likely if we remain together. Hence, we become more visible; the Coach boat or the Safety boat needs to be the last boat returning to the docks.

Lining up

Lining up when sailing is basically how a sailboat race begins. Each boat must hold its lane and keep the wind clear while sailing parallel to other boats on the same tack. Competitive sailors have three modes: one pinch mode, where they can sail closer to the wind but not as fast as in normal mode; the low mode, which is faster, at the cost of losing gauge or upwind gain. Imagine taking a picture of two or more boats overlapping to windward. Every face would be seen as long as the boats were sailed flat. Let’s practice this next weekend. It’ll be fun and worthwhile, ! promise.
