The Siebel Sailors Program #13

Practice makes perfect!

Today marks the 36th day of running the Siebel Sailors Program at Team Paradise. The inaugural event took place in August of 2020 which seems like yesterday. But no wonder we execute each program day with such ease despite being shorthanded every once in a while. It is nothing new that practice makes perfect. The power of repetitious work is pretty awesome. No wonder that records sooner or later will be broken!

Intermediate Sailors - Morning Session

We had six sailors participate in the morning session, so we rigged three RS Fevas with main and jib. Today’s drill was to sail Beam-Reach between two markers, clockwise around. The trick is to stay on a straight line between the marks, keeping the spacing between the boats at 2-3 boat lengths. On a whistle, all boats are to trim in and begin sailing a Close-Hauled course. Does this sound like the beginning of racing? (The pictures below have a frame describing the drill).

Time in the boat

The more you sail, the better sailor you become. Time in the boat is where it’s at! For those who want to excel in sailing, once per week is not enough. This is why we offer Wednesday After School Sailing. Schedule online using promo code SAIL-FAST. It’s free for those sailing in the Intermediate group.

Beginner Sailors - Afternoon Session

Kids from Breakthrough Miami joined in with our regular group today. The weather was super nice and the forecast was “spot-on”. Yours truly took the opportunity to skipper one of the RS Ventures. We did not use any of our RS Feva. We followed our float plan sailing towards Key Biscayne and then bore away towards our destination, the Twin Sisters Sandbar by the Deering Channel just East of the Vizcaya Museum. I had two rookies steer the boat and even dock it upon our return to port. How cool is that?

We made it back to shore in time so that boats and equipment could be cleaned and stored away. Coach Joe did the “Keep-Start-Stop” debriefing. This is the best opportunity for the Student Voice, which is one of the five Siebel Sailors Program Habits of Excellence.
