The Siebel Sailors Program #14

Windy day!

It didn’t matter that there was a small craft advisory in effect for Biscayne Bay today, we still managed to sail. (See weather forecast below)

Intermediate Sailors - Morning Session

The windy conditions made us stay inside the classroom this morning. There is usually not much time for chalk talks and more in-depth learning during our 3-hour sessions, so it was all good. Normally, we go sailing right away. The kids are getting better by the week and they are starting to look pretty good!

The more you sail, the better sailor you become. Time in the boat is where it’s at! For those who want to excel in sailing, once per week is not enough. This is why we offer Wednesday After School Sailing. Schedule online using promo code SAIL-FAST. It’s free for those sailing in the Intermediate group.

Homework

In order to speed up the learning process, I’m encouraging the kids to visit www.teamparadise.org/classroom in order to prepare for their next lesson!

Beginner Sailors - Afternoon Session

Our regional Siebel Sailors Program coach MacKenzie McGuckin joined our session today. She brought Palm Beach Siebel Coach Jenny with her. It was the perfect timing because we were a bit short-handed. We divided up the teams for two RS Ventures, the Castoldi safety boat and the Boston Whaler coach boat. The plan was to sail around for a while and then stop at the sandbar. While on our way there, Coach McKenzie came on the radio and strongly suggested that we skip the sandbar and head back for a meeting in the classroom.

MacKenzie had observed that the kids didn’t pay much RESPECT to the coaches, yours truly included. It basically becomes a safety issue when kids don’t listen! Most of the kids were either distracted or not paying attention and it seemed like they didn’t hear anything I said.

Back on shore, Coach MacKenzie gathered the kids in the classroom. Two kids were selected to establish what “punishment“ they should have for being disrespectful. They were left alone in the classroom to sort it out. Once they had agreed, the coaching staff returned for the verdict. The possible “punishment” that they came up with was: Call and tell parents; No fun; Sailing time cut; No treats. The kids took this seriously, as they should. I thought that the process was very fair and fostering for the kids and also extremely helpful to us!
