Summer Camp

Learning how to Sail

Our sailing camp is all about having fun while learning how to sail. It begins with water safety and comfort, then moves on towards sailing more every day. The campers spend less time in the classroom and as much time on/in the water as possible. We follow US Sailing’s Small Boat Beginner Student-Level Skill Evaluation and use the Scope and Sequence portions to build our curriculum. It works really well!

The weather cooperated with us, and we were able to sail every day. For the most part, we stayed on the nearshore between Paradise Island305 and the Sister Banks. We sailed to the West Point of Key Biscayne one time. Other times we anchored in deeper waters so that campers could dive and do flips without ever touching the bottom.

We set up a beam-reach course on the last day, using three RS Fevas. The campers first crewed with a volunteer, so that they could get a feel for how to do it. Sort of what monkey sees, monkey does. Then they switched positions for the camper to steer. They seemed to gain confidence with every lap they sailed.

Our Summer Camp will continue on July 11. We welcome some new campers along with the returning sailors. We are looking forward to seeing you all!.

Let’s go sailing!

Volunteers

Our sailing camp would not happen without our much-appreciated volunteers! We are blessed with super talented youth sailors who set great examples and teach campers how to sail in a fun and interactive way. Then there is Natty, who is a 5th-grade teacher on summer break from her job working in the public school system. She is awesome and very good at motivating the kids! Thank you all for your time and effort! You make a big difference and our camp a big success!
