Fun, learning and safety
The second week of summer camp is completed. We had eight campers, and similar to the first week, they liked sailing and being on the water. Thanks to Ed, Mo, Josh, Dante, Addie, Natasha, Jian, and Gavin for leading the way!
Day 1 -
The weather forecast for the day called for a 70% chance of rain. Storms were to approach from the east and arrive before noon. The morning was calm, so we decided to go for a ride on the safety boat. We headed south through Dinner Key Marina and continued the scenic ride along the waterfront towards Coral Gables Waterway and finally made a u-turn by the Cocoplum Circle. As we returned to the bay, the conditions were sailable. We raced back to the Sailing Center for lunch. After re-assessing the conditions, we launched one Feva and one RS Venture and went for a short sail. Big dark clouds were approaching from the east, so we did the right thing and headed back to port. The rest of the day was spent debriefing, playing games.
Day 2 - Paradise Island 305
With the previous day in memory, we decided to stay close to shore. The day turned out to be very nice. Lots of sailing, campers sailing alone and having so much fun. This is what it’s all about!
Day3 - West Point Key Biscayne
Great weather forecast for the day. With the southerly wind, we decided to sail across the bay to the most beautiful sandbar, with the cleanest water in Biscayne Bay. The pictures and the video speaks for itself!
Day 4 - Paradise Island 305
The weather forecast did not look good, but we decided to tow the RS Ventures to “305”. As we arrived, the clouds looked threatening, so we turned around and headed right back to port. We did not want a repeat of Monday’s scare. By the time we finished lunch, the weather had cleared, and we headed back out again. This was a winner!
Day 5 - Sister Banks
Arguably the best day of the week! Everyone sailed! Again, the campers preferred to sail around alone instead of playing on the sandbar or chilling in the safety boat. Just what we were hoping for!
