USSC-City of Miami Parks Sailing 2024 Week-2

Team Paradise is honored to work for the US Sailing Center Miami (USSC), which provides the ultimate Sailing Sailing Summer Camp experience for children in Miami, our Magic City. Beginning on July 22nd, we will have kids from twelve different parks. Each day, campers from other parks in the city will be brought. USSC will serve approximately 150 kids in a couple of weeks.

Little Haiti Soccer Park and Legion Park July 29

Little Haiti Soccer Park/Legion Park by Team Paradise Sailing

The second week USSC-City of Miami Parks Sailing started out calm with plenty chances of thunderstorms. We towed a couple of RS Ventures out through the harbor. Our plan was to stay very close to shore so that we could get back in a hurry, if need be. All of a sudden the wind picked up so that everyone could sail. We had eleven campers, three counselors plus our staff of eight team members. We had so much fun! The best was saved for last when coach Dez from Little Haiti Soccer Park came up to me as we were putting our boats away for the day. He expressed great appreciation for the US Sailing Center’s initiative and said that he will be looking for his park to return and sail with us again during the school year. Let’s make that happen!

Shenandoah Park July 30

Shenandoah Park by Team Paradise Sailing

Shenandoah Park brought nine campers and a couple of counselors for a fun day on the water. Again, we had to stay close to home in the event of thunderstorms that could bring lightning and much stronger wind. There is no need to go very far. 60% of the campers had sailed before and there was only one camper with low water comfort. It’s mandatory to wear a life jacket when sailing with Team Paradise and summer camp is no different. It relieves everyones fear of the water. Everyone seemed to enjoy sailing! Some campers even helmed (steered) for a while). We our two RS Ventures and our propeller-less safety boat. Before heading back to shore, we did a high-speed excursion while some of the campers preferred to keep sailing.

Pat Downey was out there as usual in the US Sailing Center’s coach boat, adding another layer of safety to the program. Pat arranged to have pizza delivered, which was very much appreciated by everyone.

Peacock Park July 31

Peakcock Park by Team Paradise Sailing

Today was a special day for us. Not only did we have 21 campers and two counselors in attendance, but our district Commissioner Damian Pardo, his liaison Javier Gonzalez, and Peacock Park’s Martha Garcia witnessed the beginning of our big day. It’s a great honor for our sailing program and the US Sailing Center to have them visit.

Other good news was that the majority of the campers were swimmers and boaters, and many of them had sailed before. We added a couple of RS Fevas to our fleet of RS Ventures, loaded up our propeller-less safety boat, and headed out on the Bay. Pat Downy, representing the US Sailing Center, offered coaching advice and another layer of safety. It made a significant difference.

Charlie DeLucca Park August 1

Charlie DeLucca Park by Team Paradise Sailing

Today we had ten campers visiting. Most of tyhe group could swim, all had good water comfort, and some had benn boating and sailed before. We used two RS Ventures, two RS Fevas and our propeller-less safety boat. In addition there to, Pat was aboard the US Sailing Center coach boat working with the RS Feva teams and added safety. There were no thunderstorm threatening so we sailed to the Sister Banks by Viscaya. Our boats kept sailing, making several trips from our anchor spot. Everyone sailed! The best call of the day was to have the campers eat their lunch before going sailing. Everyone had energy to stay out and have fun. reat utilization of time.

Henry Reeves Park August 2

Henry Reeves Park by Team Paradise Sailing

Today was our final day of the USSC-City of Miami Parks Sailing 2024. I can’t believe how quickly a couple of weeks “blows by.” Somehow, the best sailing conditions were saved for last. Also, we had a small group of seven campers plus one counselor, sailing in a couple of RS Ventures and one RS Feva. Our destination was the Sister Banks like it had been many times before. No other group has appreciated our efforts more than Henry Reeved Park. Positive affirmation never hurts. It was nice to hear, “This was the most fun excursion we have had all summer.” The campers had a lot of fun and enjoyed sailing. They even disciplined each other at one point, saying, “Keep your life preserver on; if not, we may not get invited back next year”! As usual, Coach Pat was in the US Sailing Center’s coach boat, making everything work smoother. Check out the video below with Pat lecturing on how to sail backward. Suddenly, a thunderstorm approached, so we lifted our anchors and headed for safety on shore. Back at the US Sailing Center, Pat had preordered pizza, which was welcomed by all! Thanks for a great Summer!
